Nuno Costa was born in 1980 and started playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1998, he continued his musical studies at the Academia de Amadores de Música (Lisboa). Later, he enters the school of the Hot Clube de Portugal, having received a scholarship in 2002 to complete his studies. In 2003, again with a scholarship, he continued his education at the Berklee College of Music, having finished the Film Scoring course in 2005.
In 2009, he records his first album, “(...) - Reticence between parentheses” for the Tone of a Pitch label. «With his debut on record, Nuno Costa asserts himself as an interesting guitarist and, above all, as one of the great composers of our jazz.» The disc has a strong visual component, running away from pre-defined formulas and structures. Intimately connected to the cinematographic universe and with a repertoire made up exclusively of originals. "This disc reveals an original and ambitious project... A cohesive work, of enormous coherence and frankly appealing." In 2012, he released the album “All Must Go” for the same label. «Packed with solid and imaginative writing, played by a group of amazing improvisers, All Must Go is a dazzling musical experience that should not be missed by anyone interested in modern jazz.» "Detox" was launched in 2015 and widely mentioned in the international specialized press. According to Mário Laginha «It is a pleasure to listen and it is never predictable. I don't feel that it's necessary to order more than one record.” “À Deriva” is his 4th album as leader and the first of Saga Cega. A project that for the first time in its career moves away from the fields of jazz and has a recognized cast on the national art scene. NOA is another of the formations led by him. The group has existed since 2012 and has been one of its most active projects ever since, with concerts at Casa da Música, Hot Clube, Jimmy Glass and various jazz festivals from North to South. 2020 is the year of "Evidumente", an album edited on vinyl by this trio.
Nuno Costa also has a “Filme/Concerto” project and, in partnership with pianist Óscar Graça, composes a new soundtrack for some of the most emblematic silent films in the history of cinema. This project has regularly participated in several national film festivals, highlighting the Invicta.Música.Filmes cycle at Casa da Música, FIKE, Faial Filmes Fest (Azores Film Festival), Encontros de Viana, among many others. Alongside this project, he works regularly with directors, composing music for the most diverse formats.
He currently belongs to the teaching staff of the Luís Villas-Boas Jazz School (Hot Clube de Portugal), Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa and is a PhD student in Performing Arts and Moving Image at the University of Lisbon.
